John Carew is sentenced to prison for tax fraud. The ex-Norway, Valencia and Aston Villa international inadvertently failed to provide information about his income, for which he was sentenced to 14 months in prison.
Carew, 43, was also fined ?45, 353 (NOK 540, 000) for tax fraud totaling ?456, 264 (NOK 5. 4 million).
If Carew had acted willfully in committing tax fraud between 2017 and 2019, prosecutors reportedly thought that the appropriate punishment for Carew would have been around two years and seven months in prison.
In a 38-page judgment, the court concluded that Carew acted with gross negligence.
The Norwegian had previously pleaded guilty to fraud charges brought by the Norwegian tax authority, with his lawyer Berit Reiss-Andersen insisting that the case should have been treated as a plea case given that he admitted to tax evasion, butat the same time, he claimed that he did not commit fraud intentionally. Carew`s lawyer believes that the court`s decision should be seen as a victory.
In the tax evasion case against Carew, the so-called 183-day rule was used.
As a taxable resident abroad, which John has been since 2000, a citizen cannot stay in Norway for more than 183 days.
Evidence was presented against John claiming that he exceeded this threshold for six consecutive years from 2014 to 2019, while the ex-footballer`s bank card transactions were tracked. Carew did not dispute this evidence.
He insists that the advice of his agent, Per Flood, forced him not to disclose information about income and assets outside his country.
The prosecution contends that Carew had ample opportunity to correct the information provided to the authorities, but chose not to do so.
